The Norbert Elias Foundation
On this website you will find information about the life and work of Norbert Elias, who is now recognised as one of the most significant sociologists of the twentieth century.
Though Elias is particularly well known for the sociological approach he established in his magnum opus On the Process of Civilisation, first published in 1939, his later research, writings and theories had far-reaching impact too. He developed a theory of social processes operating in human societies from the earliest forms of human settlements to the emergence of contemporary society.
If you are interested in participating in upcoming events relating to the work of the Norbert Elias Foundation, you will find information in our blog. We are particularly keen to encourage the participation of students. We try to give our gatherings a hierarchy-free atmosphere, where people meet on equal footing. We also offer some financial support for study and events connected with Elias’ legacy. See the information on the Funding and Grants page.
