Allowed to Know Everything: New documentary on Abram de Swaan now available on our website

A new documentary on the life and work of Abram de Swaan is now available on the Norbert Elias Foundation website.

Alles mogen weten / Allowed to Know Everything presents a lively conversation between De Swaan and writer Karin Amatmoekrim. Subtitled in English, the film traces De Swaan’s intellectual trajectory: from his upbringing and academic formation to his encounters with Norbert Elias and Johan Goudsblom, which shaped his sociological perspective.

In the interview, De Swaan reflects on several of his major contributions to sociology, including his doctoral work on coalition theory and his influential studies on the welfare state, the global language system, genocidal regimes, and the worldwide backlash against women’s liberation.

The 93-minute documentary offers a portrait of one of the most prominent sociologists working within the Eliasian tradition.
