The presence of the coronavirus, especially in Latin America, generated changes in academic activities that involved the participation of a significant number of people. With respect to the XVIII SIPC 2020, we discussed three alternatives: to reschedule it for the following year, to carry it out by combining presential and virtual activities, or to carry it out only in a virtual way. In assessing the situation, and in consulting with those interested in participating, the organizers made the decision to hold the event virtually. In spite of the difficult circumstances we are experiencing in most countries in the region, academic activities continue and SIPC was created as a space, in addition to presenting research results, to discuss or analyze problems, concerns and social facts that involve us all. The SIPC continues as a space for dialogue, interaction, and strengthening the ties that we have been weaving for two decades.

NEW MODALITIES FOR SUBMITTING ABSTRACTS

The Call is open until August 10, 2020. After the approval of the summary by the Scientific Committee, which will be communicated on September 10, 2020, all participants, regardless of the mode of presentation, must confirm their participation by registering for the Symposium from September 11 to 30, in order to arrange logistics and generate certificates. There will be no registration fees.

Researchers can present to the Symposium in 3 types of modalities:

1. Thematic tables (and other forms of discussion):

A collective proposal for a thematic table can be presented (in a single .pdf or .docx file) with the following:

• Name of the table (or other form of discussion)
• Synthesis of maximum 4 lines on the general points that will be addressed in the table.
• Name of the participants and an abstract of each participant’s presentation. The summaries must contain the following:
  • They should not exceed 800 words.
  • They must contain the name and surname of the researcher, academic degree and/or institutional ties, title and abstract of the paper.
  • If the paper is to be presented by more than one researcher, it cannot exceed 3 researchers per paper. In this case, the speakers are requested not to forget that they must divide the time of the presentation between them (20 minutes maximum).
• A minimum of 3 participants and a maximum of 4 participants is recommended.
• The proposal must include participants representing at least two different countries.

The proposal to this session format has no thematic restrictions. Proposals for thematic panels should be sent by 10 August 2020 to simposioelias2020@gmail.com.

2. Abstract of individual paper:

Individual researcher’s abstracts should be submitted in .docx or .pdf format to simposioelias2020@gmail.com. They should not exceed 800 words. They must contain the name and surname of the researcher, academic degree and/or institutional affiliation, title and summary of the paper.

If the work is to be presented by more than one researcher, it cannot exceed 3 researchers per paper. In this case, the researchers are requested not to forget that they must divide the time of the presentation and debate among themselves.

3. Diffusion of books, files of scientific magazines, other publications:

Registered participants in the Symposium who wish to publish books, journal dossiers and other publications should express their interest to present them in the Symposium to the Organizing Committee by e-mail: simposioelias2020@gmail.com. For each approved proposal, the author will have up to 5 minutes to present the publication.

FUNCTIONING RULES OF THE EVENT

The Symposium will be held in a virtual way. Therefore, the Organizing Committee has planned this instruction on how the event will work. The Symposium will have:

• An official opening ceremony, followed by a Conference or opening table.
• Thematic tables sessions (and other forms of discussion).
• Video presentation and discussion sessions.
• Plenary lectures or tables of invited researchers.
• Artistic/cultural interventions.
• Closing of the event.

1. Thematic tables sessions (and other forms of discussion):

 There will be thematic conference tables (and other forms of discussion: web seminars, interviews, institutional meetings, etc.), for the participation of researchers with doctoral degrees and/or experience in research with the theories of Norbert Elias:

• The sessions will take place live on the event’s web platform, with a duration of up to 1 hour and 30 minutes, and will be recorded for public availability.
• Each participant will have up to 20 minutes of presentation.
• The table moderator will be in charge of planning and ensuring the internal development of the table.

The thematic tables sessions (and other forms of discussion) will be organized in two ways:

• Tables proposed by a group of researchers.
• Tables proposed by the organizing/scientific committee: The papers presented individually and approved by the scientific committee that do not find a place in the thematic tables proposed by the groups of researchers, will integrate thematic tables that will be proposed by the Organizing/Scientific Committee of the event.

2. Video presentation and discussion sessions

Sessions will be held to present the work of doctoral researchers, postgraduates and students (doctorate, master’s, undergraduate) who are beginning their research with the theories of Norbert Elias. Each session will have a total duration of 1 hour and 30 minutes and will be recorded for public availability.

The speakers in these sessions are required to:

• Record before the Symposium their intervention in a video of between 8 and 10 minutes long according to the recommendations that the Organizing Committee will give them after their registration to the Symposium.
• Send the video until October 20, 2020, via WeTransfer (com) to simposioelias2020@gmail.com.
• Immediately after sending the video, the speaker must send to the e-mail simposioelias2020@gmail.com the document “Authorization for the publication of the video and the public use of the images” that will be provided after his/her registration to the Symposium. If there are co-authors, the details of each of them must also be included in the authorization document.

Video-recorded presentations will be available in advance on the event page/program, allowing interested parties free access in advance. On the day and time of the session (which can be consulted in the general programme of the event) the author of the video must access 10 minutes before the start of the session to the virtual room indicated in the programme, where he/she will have up to 5 minutes to announce the central theme of his/her paper/video. He/she will then participate in a discussion session.

The session moderators will receive questions from the audience while the researchers announce the topic of their presentation. After the round of presentations, the session moderator will present the questions posed and prepared by the audience, assigning at least one question to each speaker. For each round of questions, the speaker will have up to 3 minutes to respond. At least 2 rounds of questions are scheduled for each presentation session.

The presentation and discussion sessions will therefore work in the following format:

1. Session introduction by the moderator: 5 minutes.
2. Presentation of the work: 20 minutes in total.

Four papers will be presented per session. Each author will have up to 5 minutes to present their work in a summarized way. Videos will not be played during the session, so it is recommended that participants in the discussion have seen them in advance.

1. First round of questions/comments: 20 minutes in total.

The moderator will present the questions from the audience to the speakers in no less than 5 minutes. There will then be up to 15 minutes for speakers to answer questions or discuss around them.

The moderator will introduce the speakers in no less than 5 minutes the questions from the audience. There will then be up to 15 minutes for speakers to respond to questions or discuss around them.

1. Third round of questions/comments: 20 minutes in total.

The moderator will introduce the speakers in no less than 5 minutes the questions from the audience. There will then be up to 15 minutes for speakers to respond to questions or discuss around them.

1. Closure of the session by the moderator: 5 minutes.

3. Diffusion of books, files of scientific magazines, other publications:

For each approved proposal, the author will have up to 5 minutes to present the publication in a space dedicated to this topic.

4. Plenary lectures or tables of invited researchers.

In these plenary conferences, the invited international professors who are experts in Norbert Elias’ theory will present their research and/or reflections to all the participants of the event.

5. Artistic/cultural interventions

Artistic/cultural interventions of various types can be presented. Proposals can be submitted in video, audio, images (in the case of exhibitions) and other formats can be discussed with the Organizing Committee, considering their technical feasibility. There are no thematic restrictions. In the case of videos and audios the recording should not exceed 30 minutes. In this modality there is no deadline for the submission of proposals and the contents will be available on the event’s website in continuous flow until the last day of the Symposium.
